In the heart of Central Region, on the south-western edge, is the satellite residential town of Queenstown. It borders Bukit Timah to the north and Tanglin to the northeast. Before World War II, Queenstown was home to hundreds of people living in attap huts (traditional housing made of palm leaves). The local economy was based on growing vegetables, raising chickens and pigs, and rearing them. Before the 1950s, Queenstown had no paved roads, and residents grew food from the fields, including tomatoes and cabbages. In the late 1980s, the city state chose Queenstown as a new housing development site due to its proximity to Tiong Bahru, where the successful public housing scheme was based. In July 1952, construction started on the first estate in the area. This was the Princess Margaret Estate, named for HM Elizabeth II’s younger sister. It was completed in 1956, and consisted of 1,000 flats and 68 terrace houses.
