Little India

little india

For the best authentic Indian cuisine in Singapore, head to Little India, a district located on Race Course Road and Serangoon Road. This area is filled with malls, jewellery shops and tailor shops. Hindu deities adorn the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, which is one of the oldest Hindu temples in the world. Jalan Besar is a hip area that has quirky cafes and inventive modern food. Helpful site.

Originally, the Serangoon Road Race Course was started in 1842 as part of the Singapore Sporting Club. Soon, it became a popular recreational area for the rich Europeans. The course is now known as the Singapore Turf Club. In the area, cattle trading prospered. The river’s proximity drew in Indian settlers, who eventually developed the neighbourhood that we know today as Little India. While the majority of the Indian settlers settled in Little China, there are some that have been renovated and are open to the public.

The Kampong Kampor Methodist Church is a prominent landmark in Little India. The building was built in 1930, and has Gothic architecture and an art deco style. The spire is a trademark feature. The church was granted conservation status in 1989. The residents of Little Asia speak Peranakan Patois and Baba Malay, and you can still hear their dialects, if you speak the language. The area is a cultural hub with plenty to do. Up next is Kallang.
