This prime location was popular with wealthy Chinese from the early 19th century. They built large villas in the area, including Tan Jiak Kim, the grandson of the late Tan Kim Seng. He paid for the building of Kim Seng Road. In the 1870s, a Malacca-born Chinese merchant named Lee Cheng Yan built his Magenta Cottage mansion, which is still in use today. He was also the owner of the nearby ice works.
Rental prices in River Valley range from S$2,500 to S$9,136, depending on the size, number of bedrooms, and location. Single-family houses are rare in the area, and there are some excellent eateries.
